[recipe] “Meatball” Sandwiches
I love meatball subs. I use to make them at home all the time. The only thing that has always irritated me about them, is the sliding factor. I hate having to dig my hands into the end of the sandwich to keep my meatballs from shooting out of the end like a Sock Monkey Foam Popper.
So the other day, I went to work on a creating a new sandwich, that’s a hybrid between an Italian sausage sandwich, hamburger and a meatball sub. I call it the Marinara SausBurgerBall Sandwich. Just kidding. I’ve been calling it “That Sausage Sandwich Thing.” You can call it whatever you want. No matter the name, it rocks!
Ingredients - “Meatballs”
1 pound ground Italian sausage [sweet, mild or hot]
1 clove garlic
1 egg
1/2 cup Romano cheese
1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasonings
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 cup panko
3/4 cup water
Ingredients - The Fixens
Sliced mozzarella cheese
Prepared tomato sauce you love
Rolls of any kind
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together the sausage, garlic, egg, cheese, all seasonings and panko until well blended. Add the water 1/4 cup at a time, mixing it in thoroughly. You should have a light and fluffy “dough” that still holds together when shaped.
Shape the “dough” into patties to fit whatever type of bread you have and any size you like. If you’re a meat eater, make them thick, if you like it light, make them thinner. Bake in your preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until cooked through.
Douse your meat patties in the marinara, then add a tablespoon or so to both sides of your bread. Pile bread, meat, cheese, bread. Voila! All done…they are SO GOOD! And so easy to eat…
