DIY sunflower seeds

I looooooove sunflower seeds from scratch. It’s so much fun and you can adjust the salt levels to your liking. Sunflowers are super easy to grow. We ended up with a bunch on accident from our bird feeder. You can check them out here.

Those things sprouted like crazy. We only kept a half dozen. It was finally harvest time, well… of what we could save from the birds. They really went wild on them.

When your sunflowers are ready and full of seeds, pick them out. Mix a solution of 4 cups of water and 1/4 cup of salt. Soak the seeds for 24 hours. If you’d like to go light salt, you can cut the salt down to 2 tablespoons, or even go salt free and skip this step all together.

Pat your seeds dry in paper towels and set them aside. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.

Let them cool and go to town! This is such a fun beginner project for kids. Letting them help water your sunflowers, pick seeds with you, roast them and eat them together. Awesome summer family fun.
