{recipes} Cleaning Green

Mini Rant: People talk about green cleaning, living green, etc...all the time. It's such a big thing these days. The funny part is, when I was growing up, all of these hot sought after recipes is just what you made - either because you didn't want to spend a bunch of money on the stuff from the store, were too far from the store, ran out of something and needed a quick replace in the middle of cleaning...I'm not even old, but I still remember before Green and Upcycling, it was just Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Well, don't let the hype keep you from turning over your household. It seems complicated and there are so many recipes out there - the thing is, most replacements take care of multiple things. You don't need 10 cleaners to replace 10 - maybe just 3 or 4 for your entire household, and they are simple, simple, SIMPLE - if you find the quick and easy ones. All you'll need is a handful of ingredients and you can replace all the cleaning products in your home.

Underneath the glamour of it all, it's just dropping back to basics. The recipes work, have worked for decades, and they are SO CHEAP! If you spend $20 on a few essential oils, some lemons and white vinegar - you'll have enough cleaning solution for over a year. Compare that to one container of disinfecting wipes at $5.00 that you'll run through in a month.

Today I'm passing on 2 recipes that are pretty much the only cleaners I use, besides specialty for carpet stains or burning something onto the stove. One is a newer adaptation from one I was using months ago. I like it better because of the scent - totally doubles as an instant deodorizer behind pets, or freshening up a room. The other is still the same good old glass cleaner - I'm re-passing it just to vouch for it again.

All Purpose Cleaner
This quick, two second cleaner is great for everything. It's naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, a natural antiseptic, antiviral, kills fungus - it's my Lysol replacement. I use it to clean our floors, toilets, counter tops, spray the kids mattresses down if they've had a cold - I even use it as a room deodorizer by spritsing a bit on the carpet, bed sheets - you name it. Completely safe and 100% natural.

Ingredients
6 ounces water
Juice of half a lemon
10 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil

Directions
Mix, throw in a spray bottle and use on everything. You can store it for months. It won't go bad. It smells so amazing! If you need to cut grease for a heavier cleaning job, add a teaspoon of white vinegar.

Streak Free Glass Cleaner
I use this recipe for all of the black appliances in the house, our flat screen TV, glass TV stand, chrome faucets, inside and outside of all the windows, mirrors - you name it. Anything I need to be perfectly clean without streaks or water spots.

Ingredients
2 cups water
1 tablespoon corn starch
1/2 cup warm water

Directions
Again, mix, put in a spray bottle and go to town. You can also store this recipe for months.
